The Procedure of Composition

Three-part painting study

With Michael Chelich

Artists of the past and present have benefited greatly when they employed a procedure of trial and error to bring about their creations. This process helped artists tap into the artist's conceptual abilities and develop imagery that more fully realized their completed works of art. This lecture will reveal the compositional development of a painting from start to finish. By showing the preliminary thumbnail sketches, black-and-white studies, and color sketches of Mike's own work and that of other artists, students will learn to organize their thoughts and feelings into pictorial imagery that best suits their creative expression. This lecture will show examples of still life, portraiture, landscape, and narrative figurative artwork.

Lecture will be held online via Zoom.
