Beginning Photoshop as an Art Tool

With Christine Mitzuk
This is a basic workshop for Adobe Photoshop as an art tool. Photoshop can be a helpful tool in preparing a drawing for a traditional/analog picture, or in making digital art. It can be used in conjunction with your knowledge of drawing and other art fundamentals to create your artistic vision. In this workshop you will be introduced to Photoshop and some ways Christine uses some of the basic tools within it as part of her art making process.
During the Friday morning lecture/demonstration, Christine will talk about the tools and demonstrate several ways she uses them. There will be time for questions. During the rest of the workshop, you’ll be coached through introductory exercises to explore how to use these tools for yourself. This is an opportunity to learn from and ask questions of an experienced Photoshop user. Christine will also suggest ways to continue to practice on your own. About a week before the workshop, Christine will supply files for the exercises to registered full workshop attendees.
Please note: Minimal technical assistance will be available, if needed, during the workshop.
Depending on the situation at the time, masks may be required for both the lecture and workshop.
The workshop does not include any software or hardware.
Requirements: You must:
- be familiar with navigating and using your device
- download and open the supplied files in Photoshop before the workshop
- have your own laptop or other device that can handle Photoshop (if using a laptop, a pressure sensitive pen tablet is recommended)
- have a subscription to Photoshop, or must own a previous version of Photoshop (Subscriptions can be as low as $9.99/month)
Strongly recommended: If using Photoshop on a laptop or similar device, a Wacom drawing tablet or similar is strongly recommended. Christine uses a Wacom Intuos (small size, price starts around $70.00). Some local resources include: Best Buy, Micro Center, Device Pitstop.
Christine has been using Photoshop since the mid 90s, first as a student at the U of MN, then through her graphic design career. She continues to use it as a professional artist and illustrator as as part of her traditional painting process and for digital paintings.
