by Doug Hokemeir-Seim
oil on canvas, 13 x 18 inches

Doug Hokemeir-Seim is a contemporary realist painter with an emphasis in portraiture, figurative and still-life paintings. He had several private instructors in his youth and was mentored by an accomplished artist in high school, who strongly encouraged him to attend art school. Though accepted into several fine art schools, Doug initially chose another path, earning degrees in engineering and an MBA while receiving some artistic instruction at the Art Institute of Chicago. After a successful corporate career and raising a family, Doug felt a strong calling to pursue his artistry. He became reengaged with the arts, serving on several boards of arts institutions. In 2016, he enrolled in the part-time program at The Atelier Studio Program of Fine Arts and grew excited about the possibilities at The Atelier, enrolling in the full-time program in 2017. In 2019, Doug retired from his corporate career and committed himself to his artistic progress and then graduated from The Atelier in 2022. Many of Doug's paintings tie into a story evoked by his poetry, and he is often inspired by artists and works tied to classical mythology. Doug now paints professionally from his studio in Northeast Minneapolis.
