This class prepares students to make anatomicallyinformed figure drawings. Students will learn to see and draw the skeleton and surface muscles through lecture, drawing, games, and hands-on exercises, plus supplementary readings and videos. Using skeletal landmarks, students will place and draw the skeleton and surface muscles on an image of a figure, and develop a shorthand drawing vocabulary for compositional sketches. The class will draw overlays of a figure in front, side and back views, plus a personal choice of a figure in perspective. Appropriate for beginners and advanced students. Students may also wish to enroll in the Monday night figure class to draw studies corresponding to the anatomy class.
DRAWING SUPPLIES: Colored pencils, any kind; Paper Mate “Tuff Stuff” eraser stick; 2" 3-ring binder; package of 25 page protectors; ultra-fine dryerase markers: black and one other color. Can be purchased at the Atelier: Graphite pencils: H and HB; Tombow Mono Zero Eraser Round Tip; Canson Vidalon Vellum: 9"x12" pad or large sheet to cut down; Artist’s tape. Using a fixed armature and oil-based clay you will learn how to sculpt a 21-inch tall skeleton. This process will teach you the skeletal proportions, structure, and important anatomical landmarks visible under the surface of the skin. Eighteen hours of instruction with breaks for homework. Class 2: The Muscles will be offered in Winter 2019. THREE TWO-DAY SESSIONS. 2-week break between classes for Homework.
Session One, Day 1: You will pose your armature and apply clay over it with instruction.
Session One, Day 2: Finish blocking in and start refining all major forms. Break Homework: refine skeleton as instructed.
Session Two, Day 1: Continue to refine surfaces and map out the ribcage.
Session Two, Day 2: Refining the ribcage and other areas. Break Homework: refine skeleton as instructed.
Session Three, Day 1: Refining the surface planes and landmarks of the skull.
Session Three, Day 2: Refining and finishing all remaining surfaces.

Using the skeleton from Class One you will learn the process of applying the muscles. You may choose to sculpt the muscles on the right side or both sides. We will start with the leg, then torso, next the arm, and lastly the head. We sculpt the deepest muscles and layer out. This technique will teach you not only the muscle origins and insertions but also mass, form, tendons, fat pads, and the bones showing through. This unique process of studying anatomy will benefit artists who draw, paint and sculpt the human form.
THREE 2-DAY SESSIONS
Session One, Day 1: Adding the upper leg muscles.
Session One, Day 2: Adding the lower leg muscles.
Session Two, Day 1: Adding the torso muscles.
Session Two, Day 2: Adding the arm muscles.
Session Three, Day 1: Adding the muscles to the skull.
Session Three, Day 2: Refining the head muscles and where needed.
