We are lucky in Minnesota to get such a show of color each autumn. For the plein air painter, managing all of that color can be a challenging yet rewarding task. This workshop will focus on breaking down the painting process into logical steps to simplify the complexity of the landscape. Each day we will work on exercises that build on one another to enhance understanding of the process. We will discuss the value structure in the landscape, and the effect that different types of light have on value structure. We will also work on color relativity, thinking about color as value, and organizing value/color shapes in a way that creates dynamic starts.

Bridget Ertelt is a contemporary realist/Impressionist painter. She was born in northern Minnesota, and was fortunate to have lessons in classical methods being taught in the art classes at her high school. It was there that she was first exposed to Plein Air Painting, which has become a passion of hers. After high school, Bridget received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. Throughout her education and nursing career she continued to study art. After moving to the Twin Cities, Bridget became involved in Outdoor Painters of MN, and began taking workshops from many national contemporary artists. She discovered the Atelier in 2011, and took 4 years of part time classes before enrolling in, and graduating from The Atelier full time 4 year program. She is currently continuing to paint portraits, figures, and still life work. She has participated in many state plein air events, and has won several awards for her work. She enjoys traveling, and the challenge of painting many different types of landscapes. Website: www.BridgetErtelt.com.

This workshop by ARC Living Master, Mary Pettis, is especially designed to inspire and inform artists who have a working knowledge of oil painting and are now ready to move towards more personally expressive and masterful paintings, particularly in the art of landscape. Embracing both classical principles and proven plein air techniques from the greatest contemporary schools of thought, Mary is devoted to helping painters open their hearts and minds to their artistic purpose; to give them the advanced tools and exercises that will guide them on their path. Mary will provide insights into: composing the landscape forms in a simple and direct way, maintaining a powerful expression from the first 12 minutes on; the secret of accurately capturing light and atmosphere; when and how to edit the abundance of outdoor information to create a true impression of sentiment through choice of tone and colors, specifically; how to avoid the pitfalls of making your painting too formulaic, illustrative or tight-looking; tools, tips and a method to perfect the outdoor oil sketch: your "notes to yourself!"; a means to create your own curriculum to carry you forward.
Workshop registration fills quickly, so sign up ASAP.
In her work, Mary Pettis, Expressive Realist, draws heavily upon her classical training and Russian influence. Mary has been juried into and won awards in national and international painting events and exhibitions from New York City to Scottsdale and Maui to Barcelona. Read more at: www.marypettis.com
