The aim of this class is to familiarize the student with the basic procedures of etching. Students will be taught plate preparation; developing line-work on the copper; the use of acid; inking the plate; handling a press; use of papers. As these basic procedures are covered the student will begin to understand the capabilities and limits of their own workspace in regards to the etching process. Also covered will be the strategies of drawing from Life directly upon the copper, and drawing in the studio with the assistance of preparatory work. By day two the student will have developed generic, technical exercises on the copper plates to better understand the use of line work. The prints of past printmakers will be referenced as an aid. Acid will be used to etch the plate, and by day three and four the student will go through the motions of printing these technical exercises on paper, as a later reference for their own work. Stuart Loughridge is a second-generation painter and printmaker, and currently operates, full-time, a studio of painting and printmaking in Saint Paul. Stuart spent three years studying at The Atelier, and further studies afterwards in Saint Paul and abroad. Over the years Stuart has conducted many classes and lectures on etching.
