CLASSES
- The Art of Memory

- The greatest artists in all traditions have always been those who have
done profound studies of nature, whether with physical media in hand
or by keen observation alone. A cultivated visual memory is a brilliant
and limber tool for the artist. It helps us keep that which really
matters, and filter out that which is of little consequence. Memory
drawing makes possible a true creative freedom.
This will be an intense course exploring the largely lost Art of Memory, as adapted to the
imaginative needs of the painter. Starting with the ancient Greeks, a panoply of techniques
will be presented and practiced with the goal that each person will assemble for themselves
a unique combination of tools that work well for them. Each will create a folio of daily
exercises to help in gauging progress and strategies, with class time being a lively mix of the
presentation of new ideas with real-time guided experiments, activities and helpful critiques.
